Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An elegant 74.9% gold (equivalent to 18K) ritual kero (drinking cup) of a simple form comprised of slightly flared walls rising to a flat, flanged rim - all upon a flat base. The walls are seamless and created from a single sheet of gold. Although gold was not favored as currency by the Chimu, it was treasured for its symbolic meaning. The Chimu believed it was associated with the sun and thereby spiritually powerful. Precious metal quality: 74.9% gold (equivalent to 18K) and 23.7% silver.
