From the ancient coastal region of Peru, ca 1000 - 1400 CE. This impressive example displays well. Such examples are rare, but those that have survived are typically well preserved from the ancient coastal grave contexts of this arid region. This example exhibits remnants of black pigment showing facial decoration. The ancient artisan used only minimal cuts to express the essential human form and expression, lending a timeless and appealing sense of style to this piece. Interestingly, the ancient maker worked around a small knot in the wood, just where the navel would appear on the human form, demonstrating skillful forethought in planning the design and execution of the form. Measuring approximately 11-3/4" tall (mounted on custom display block) x about 4" wide. The figure alone measures approximately 8 1/2" tall. Provenance: Former Alexandria, VA collection.
