Description:

Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 900-1200 CE. This striking vase features an iconographic theme honoring the jaguar, king of beasts in the Pre-Columbian world. Two spotted cats formed with appliqués and painted in characteristic dark brown slip on cream ground form the centerpieces of the front and back of the spouted vessel. The spotted hide of the nocturnal feline was oftentimes compared to the starry sky and related the jaguar to the night sun. The shoulder is adorned with four more hand built jaguar heads that share a chocolate brown painted body. Elegant rope patterned handles bridge the spout and spherical body of the piece making for a stunning vessel for its form, decorative scheme, and richly symbolic iconographic program. ~9-1/4"T x 5-1/4"W x 4-1/2"D Ex-George Martin Collection, Georgia, USA All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
