Colima and Nayarit, W. Mexico, CA 300 BCE to 1300 AD. The 2 1/2" long Colima double censer was used to hold fired copal as its smoke, rising to the skies, was considered by the ancients to be 'food for the gods.' The three pieces of naturally occurring crystalline copal were found on Pre-Columbian sites by Langdon and believed to be left-overs from that practice. They measure from 20 to 40 mm in width. Provenance: Ex-Lynn Langdon collection acquired in the 1950's.
