Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved volcanic stone in the form of a head, with a simplistic, straight nose contiguous with a horizontal hairline, indented eyes, and mouth. Aztec stone sculpture is a culmination of centuries of stone carving in Mesoamerica, using volcanic stone, these ancient artists were able to create remarkably detailed and poignant artworks. The Spaniards wrote of the Aztecs believing that stone quarried to be carved had magical properties and was alive, able to speak and offer prophecies. Size: 6.5" L x 4" W (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
