Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Aztec culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A core used in making microblades. Obsidian was a hugely important resource in ancient Mesoamerica, traded far from its source in the volcanic zones of the Sierra Madre in Mexico and Guatemala. From this core, you can really begin to understand the process that Mesoamericans undertook to create obsidian blades and points - obsidian breaks in a very predictable and controlled way, and the evidence for that is clear. This core would have begun life as a cobble found in a stream bed in the mountains, then struck using a deer antler or small hammer stone. Size: 3.55" L (9 cm).
