Description:

Europe, 18th and 19th centuries CE. This is a pair of paper pages -- an engraving and a print -- depicting male nude figures from books about Classical subjects. The first, from the 1700s, shows an engraving of the back of a Roman artifact of a bronze mirror; the bronze had low relief figures of three nude male gods including Mercury with his winged helmet on the right. The second is a print from ca. 1875 that said "painting" in both French and German and shows a muscular and nude Theseus standing atop the slain Minotaur and surrounded by partially nude young male admirers. Size: 8.8" W x 13.3" H (22.4 cm x 33.8 cm).
