Description:

Northwestern Europe, England, Post-Medieval period, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A fine pair of iron shears featuring a curved grip and flat triangular blades, that once scissored together when the band was clenched. Similar tools have been used for millennial for any variety of purposes: surgical cutting instruments, hair trimming, wool shearing, and grave goods. These early scissors are a smaller size - likely for needlework and were purportedly recovered from the River Thames, hence the russet patina. Size: 4" L x 0.75" W (10.2 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
