Portugal, Estremoz, ca. 1980 CE. This is a charming and beautiful piece of folk art by Alfonzo Arlindo made in the town of Estremoz. It is a polychrome figure of John the Baptist with a kind face and fine clothing, wearing a large, star-like crown. He is surrounded by tall flowers on wires that move slightly; a small black and white lamb, symbolizing the Lamb of God, stands playfully at his knee. Estremoz, near the border with Spain, is known for its handmade clay figures, a tradition dating back to the 18th century. Size: 5.25" W x 14.35" H (13.3 cm x 36.4 cm)
