Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 3rd-2nd century BCE. Bold, geometric patterns in red, black, and cream are characteristic of ceramic sculptural works in the Chupicuaro style. This is an extraordinary example. Note the striking step-fret pattern painted on figure's chest (both front and back sides), face, and headdress (both front and back sides). Such renditions are traditionally interpreted as textiles; however, as they also cover the face, they may also indicate body paint. She is a female with a pregnant belly, shoulders sharply delineated, arms at her side, standing on voluminous legs with geometrically-patterned leg tattoos on both front and back, presenting an expressive face with large protruding eyes, an open mouth with carved teeth visible, as well as pierced ears for ornaments. Wonderful example! 13-1/2"T x 5-1/2"W x 3-3/4"D
