Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A large hand-carved stone celt or axe head with a lovely surface. The stone is rounded with a tapered and sharpened blade edge. The stone is a beautiful dark green with lighter green and white inclusions. The surface has been polished to a pleasingly smooth texture. The celt is a hand tool of a highly-stylized ritual form with ceremonial and funerary purposes. This blade would have been hafted onto a wooden handle of a ceremonial hatchet. Designed for a votive function, celts like these are fabulous examples of fine artistry! Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.3" W x 6.75" H (5.8 cm x 17.1 cm)
