Description:

Native American / First Nations, Pacific Coast, United States & Canada, California to Alaska, ca. 1500 to 1900s CE. A varied collection of fishing hooks and lures, from various West Coast indigenous communities made from stone, bone, walrus ivory, abalone shell, and cordage. Included are 5 J-shaped chert fishing hooks, each hand knapped with a notched head or loop for securing to lines, and 2 C-shaped fishhooks made from abalone shell, and several fragmentary tips. It is thought stone tools were used to chip and smooth the abalone shells, leaving the shimmering nacre intact as lures to attract the fish. There is also a slender barbed point made from bone antler or walrus ivory, a bone hook with a cord wrapped around the end with the remains of a stone barb, and white ivory lure shaped like a fish with cotton cordage. Size of largest hook: 2" L x 1" W (5.1 cm x 2.5 cm)

This is an ESA antique exempt piece of ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington.
