Papua New Guinea, Papuan Gulf Western District, Bamu River, ca. mid-20th century. A marriage head carved in high and low relief from a hemisphere of hard wood large enough and heavy enough to require being held in both hands. Beautifully painted in red and white against deep browns of natural wood that shows wonderful patina. Collected in situ by cartographer Ron Perry who made at least five study strips to Papua New Guinea from the late 1950s to 1965. Measures 9-1/4"L (23.5 cm) x 7"W (17.75 cm) x 4-1/4"D (10.75 cm). Provenance: Ex-B. Pickard private collection, Oklahoma City, OK; Ex-Ron Perry collection, acquired in 1950s-1965. Mr. Perry was a cartographer who surveyed Papua New Guinea before it attained nationhood. Works from his collection have been featured in major museum exhibitions.
