Ancient World, Pleistocene period, 2.58 million to 11,7000 years ago. A fossilized turtle shell with preserved shell structures from the carapace. Turtle shells are deceptively simple looking, but actually very complicated pieces of evolution that form a shield for the vital organs of the turtle. Pleistocene turtles (Reptilia: Chelonni) lived nearly all over the world, although none have thus far been found in New Zealand. Size: 6.5" L x 5.7" W x 3.8" H (16.5 cm x 14.5 cm x 9.7 cm)
