Description:

Australia, found in Kings Creek, Darling Downs, Queensland, Pleistocene epoch, ca. 2.5 million to 35,000 years ago. The lower half of a fossilized femur from an animal belonging to the genus Procoptodon, a now-extinct, giant, short-faced kangaroo that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene. This example has an excellent fossilized surface, with a clear view to the interior of the bone and of the knee joint. Mineralization has resulted in a mottled pale red surface with black, blue, and grey. When grown, this animal would have been nearly three times the size of a modern kangaroo. It also seems that they walked instead of hopping! Size: 11" L x 3.25" W (27.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
