Pablo Ruiz Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973), "Two Ballet Dancers at the Barre from 14 Dessins Originaux", graves sur cuivre, published by Louis Grosclaude, Lausanne, 1940. Copperplate engraving on BFK Rives vellum paper, Edition 161/300 (numbered in pencil at lower left). Signed in the plate at lower right. There were 14 similar compositions engraved on copper after original drawings by Picasso. Each one, including this one, was supervised by the artist and created during his visit in Monte Carlo with his wife, the dancer Olga Kokhlova, for the season of Russian ballet. This lithograph is from the first edition of 1940; the suite was published in a second edition in 1943 by the same publisher accompanied by a text, and titled "Grace and Movement."
