Description:

Ancient Eastern Mediterranean, Phoenicia or Carthage, ca. 5th to 2nd BCE. A paste-glass charm in the form of an anthropomorphic head, made from a cobalt blue with applied opaque white forming the facial features. There are three faces, to watch and protect the wearer from all sides, and this bead may have been strung on a cord for wearing as a talisman pendant to ward off evil. Phoenician face beads were widely traded and distributed throughout the Mediterranean between the 7th and 3rd centuries BCE. Size: 1" L (2.5 cm)
