Description:

Phoenicia, ca. 1200 BCE. This is a bronze carving of a god in the classic Phoenician style, with the god wearing a tall, pointed hat. The facial features are simplistic but clearly human; the torso has some kind of band slung from one shoulder, and the arms are straight and at the sides. This god is often described as enthroned, with an Egyptian-style crown, and probably represents a deity shared between the Phoenicians and the Egyptians; it seems likely that the god is Reshef. Figures like this one and other statuettes of gods were produced in workshops, and spread out through trade as far afield as Spain. Size: 1.25" W x 2.75" H (3.2 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Private Washington State Collection acquired in 1966 at Parke Bernet Gallery.
