Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely jar of a squat form, free-blown from translucent glass of a pale blue-green hue. The vessel has a slightly concave base with a rough pontil scar, a spherical body, a corseted neck, and a flared rim with an in-folded lip. Layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across the vessel and nicely accentuate its soft turquoise hue. Size: 2.1" W x 2.8" H (5.3 cm x 7.1 cm)

#140264

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to base and body, with micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and light encrustations and weathering film, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits and great iridescence throughout.
