Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, purportedly found in Kentucky, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-made, round-bodied jar with a slightly corseted neck, an unpronounced rim, and two strap handles set close to the body of the jar. The Mississippians used a clay and shell temper to prevent shrinkage when firing- the white shell shards are visible within the gray surface. This type of vessel is sometimes called a "bean pot" used for cooking and boiling- the rim prevented boiling over and the strap handles allowed suspension over the fire. Size: 4.75" Diameter x 4" H (12.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Illinois, USA collection; ex-Sam Cox collection
