Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A fine smoking pipe, carved from a mottled brown stone with orange inclusions and covered with traces of grey pigment. The pipe has a stocky rectangular body, a conical mouthpiece protruding from one end, and a cylindrical receptacle projecting from the top. Pipe forms with a central receptacle chamber like this example are common in ritual pipe smoking in ancient Chile. Pipes were symbolic gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and style made in different regions have been found far afield from their lands of origin. Size: 3" L x 0.8" W x 1.7" H (7.6 cm x 2 cm x 4.3 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.
