Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. Finely woven from natural camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of rose, chocolate brown, and tawny beige, an elegant stylized seabird. The artist made some bold choices in terms of scale. Notice the avian's pronounced beak - possessing an exaggeratedly large size when compared with the head. Also take note of the size of bird's eye which dominates the bird's head. Then there is the lengthy neck - nearly as long as the legs below - and the body with those fabulous fingerlike plumes extending. A well-preserved section originally sewn on a gauze textile, perhaps intended to be an emblem for a tunic belonging to an important individual. Mounted on museum-quality black fabric for presentation. A finely embroidered bird from the ancient Pachacamac! Size: 8.5" W x 11" H (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm); 10.5" W x 16.375" H (26.7 cm x 41.6 cm) on fabric covered mount
