Description:

Near East, Persia (Iran), Iraq, and Central Asia, Seljuq (Saljuq / Seljuk) period, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. An absolutely stunning cast bronze basin with Kufic/Arabic script around the interior of the rim and in a ring in tondo. The bowl is large, with thin walls and a gently folded out, narrow rim. A bowl of this size was probably used in ceremony or for serving large quantities of liquid in a banquet setting. Seljuq artwork wove together elements from Persia, Islam, and the nomadic cultures of Central Asia; it was often local in character, produced under the patronage of small kingdoms or dynasties within the wider purview of the Seljuq Empire. For example, in the Iranian province of Khorasan, Arabic inscriptions were written in the "animated" form, combined with animal and human figures. On this bowl, you can see how the script blends into the overall design of the piece. Size: 15.55" W x 5.35" H (39.5 cm x 13.6 cm)
