Near East / Central Asia, Ottoman Empire, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A gorgeous spelter bowl with interlocking bulb decorations on the exterior and lengthy lines of text surrounding a central inscription within the basin, all covered in a layer of 21% to 25% silver. The bowl features a squat, flared foot beneath a hemispherical body and a flared rim on top. Three rings of Kufic text course around the basin interior and enclose a circular panel with additional text, perhaps containing a name or a prayer. Great patina envelops the entire vessel.
