Ancient Near East, Parthian or possibly Eastern Roman, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful earring presenting a crescent form comprised of 22K+ gold sheet adorned by bands of 'beaded' filigree with pyramidal clusters of granules decorating the lower peripheries and three garnet inlays - one of a crescent shape similar to the overall form of the earring and two either circular or teardrop shaped inlays above - all of rich wine red hues. The original gold wire hoop is attached to the top. A lovely piece of ancient jewelry that could be made into a pendant or brooch by a reputable jeweler. Size: .75" W x 1" H (1.9 cm x 2.5 cm); gold quality: 92.5% gold, equivalent to 22K+; total weight: 2.3 grams.

Provenance: ex-American collection, 1980s to 2000s; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s

  • Condition: Loss to one garnet as shown. Bending to body and ear wire commensurate with age, with light encrustations, and minor nicks to remaining upper garnet. Gold has developed wonderful warm patina.
