Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Cavernas, Paracas, ca. 300 BCE. A lovely polychrome textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of black, crimson, gold, wheat, beige, and turquoise. The fragment depicts a pair of standing shamanic individuals flanked by two minimalist jaguars, each holding a small staff in one hand and a squid in the other. The shamans have a smaller figure standing within them which represents their shamanic "alter ego." Mounted against a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 3.625" W x 7.5" H (9.2 cm x 19 cm); size (frame): 6.75" W x 10.5" H (17.1 cm x 26.7 cm).
