Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas-Proto Nazca, ca. 300 - 100 BCE. Impressive, large gold pectoral in shape of open-winged bird with mask in repousse in center. Associated with the celestial sun, moon, and Venus, sky animals acted as messengers between humankind and their deities in the Pre-Columbian world. These included birds of course - most important were the eagle, parrot, and hummingbird. Furthermore, the thirteen celestial deities had winged alter identities, all of which were birds with the exception of the butterfly. The inclusion of a masked visage in the center of this gold winged form suggests this connection between bird and deity. Each bird was associated with one of the thirteen heavenly strata, including the quetzal, turkey, quail, and hummingbird. Birds were revered for their soaring flight patterns, speed, and visual acuity. Hence, beyond its impressive artistry and metal smith technique, this pectoral created in the shape of an open-winged bird embodies the ancients' multilayered, symbolic associations with avian fauna. Custom, museum-quality stand included. 11-1/2"W x 7-7/8"H
