Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Cavernas, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A highly burnished pottery vessel of a wide form with a round but stable base, a wheel-shaped body with a dramatic carination around the midsection, a sloped shoulder, and a narrow spout with a flared rim. The shoulder is decorated with a register of incised geometric and stepped motifs that are accentuated with hues of orange-red, yellow, and black, and the exterior exhibits a dark brown, nearly black coloration. Size: 9.2" W x 6.5" H (23.4 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with light restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and nicks to rim, body, and base, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and light encrustations within some incised lines. Nice traces of original pigment around shoulder.
