Description:

Pre-Columbian, south coast of Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A handsome incised, painted, and burnished ceramic bowl with a low, flaring form. The exterior is decorated with repeated stylized figure-eight motifs below an incised rim. These resemble zoomorphic eyes. The interior has painted repeated fishhook symbols. Both interior and exterior are painted with mineral pigments mixed with plant resin that was applied post-firing to the surface. The post-fire resin painting created a shiny surface characteristic of Paracas ceramics. Size: 8.3" W x 2.45" H (21.1 cm x 6.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Westermann collection, Germany
