Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Paracas / Nazca & Inca Empire, to Post Conquest, ca. 100 BCE to 16th century CE. A mace with a wood handle, a pottery grip, and textile ornamentation, that was likely assembled from several ancient Peruvian artifacts of various origins in recent times as a complete weapon. Of note, is the pottery handle “grip” on the end that is incised and painted in the Paracas or Nazca style with birds – this might have actually been the mouthpiece to a trumpet. The star-shaped stone mace head is usually associated with Inca culture and mounted to the wood handle with a copper conical cap attached as the finial. The handle is carved and covered with ancient wool threads and crocheted / woven cords. Feathers from colorful parrots / macaws and a tuft of bristly (human?) hair are also attached. Size: 27" L x 3" W (68.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired in the 1960s
