Oceania, Papua New Guinea, lower Sepik River area, Murik Lakes region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fascinating hand-carved wooden figure, a standing male with prominent phallus and his body painted black with a mesmerizing pattern of thick white and brown lines all over the surface. His head is adorned with a mosquito mask, a large mask with a slender, ovoid profile and an exceptionally long proboscis - hence the name "mosquito mask". Size: 4.7" W x 21.75" H (11.9 cm x 55.2 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
