Description:

Adalbert Mountains, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea and dates to the early 20th century. Stone-carved, heart-shaped form made from a heavy wood with an encrusted, darkened surface. Fiber cord is quite old, but was, undoubtedly, replaced sometime after the shield was made. 32-1/2"L x 17"W. Provenance: Deaccessioned from a Florida Museum, ex- M. Cichon Tribal Arts, FL.   • Condition: In very fine condition, overall, but with some abrasions, wear, and small age cracks, as would be expected.
