Papua New Guinea (PNG), early to mid-20th century CE. This is a wooden ancestor figure with both male and female characteristics, exaggerated facial features, and posed in a seated position. The Sepik River flows from the towering highlands to the north coast of New Guinea. The people who live along its 700 mile length are known as some of the best wood carvers and sculptors in Oceania. Size: 2.75" W x 11" H (7 cm x 27.9 cm).
