Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Tonosi culture, ca. 300-500 CE. The artisans of Panama created some of the most wondrous pottery of the ancient world. This piece stems from the Tonosi basin which is isolated from the rest of the Azuero Peninsula by high mountains and dense forests. The decorative program on this piece is indicative of Bucaro Phase ceramics in which trichrome painted designs that are geometric in nature were painted on relatively simple but finely built forms. The underside of this piece features a composition of four quadrants each containing an arrow that moves in a mazelike path of concentric triangles - altogether representing the four corners of the world - incredible symbolism created with a purist's sensibility! This olla is painted like a Mimbres pot - wonderful minimalist design! 7"D x 3"H
