Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A fantastic pottery bowl of hemispherical form boasting with black-on-red imagery of a crocodile with a long, sinuous body that meanders around the deep basin and a snout resembling the beak of a bird. In Panama, the crocodile god, likely associated with strength, the sun, water, and fertility, was the principal deity for more than a thousand years. The fierce animals were connected to the underworld for their ability to float on water and drag their prey underneath to drown it. Size: 10.3" Diameter x 4.6" H (26.2 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 229. Appraised for $3,400 by Marianne Huber in 2014.
