Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of spherical form with a round but stable base, a tapered shoulder, and a flared rim atop a squat neck. The stone-burnished surfaces are adorned with polychrome pigment along with 6 abstract saurian heads bearing upturned noses and sharpened teeth. A zigzagging band of purple pigment is a telltale sign of fine Macaracas artistry. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 5.6" H (16.5 cm x 14.2 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired with restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines, and adhesive residue visible in some areas. Abrasions and fading to original pigment commensurate with age, with scattered areas of roughness. Nice preservation to decorative motifs in most areas.
