Description:

**Originally Listed At $750**

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery dish bearing an abstract crocodile creature made from intricate and bold scrolling bands of color. The dish has a broad and shallow basin resting on a ring base that may have once been part of a larger pedestal foot. The surface is slipped in beige that contrasts with the orange, purple, and black pigments coursing across that create a reptilian zoomorph with four legs, rake like claws, and a saurian head with a long snout lined with teeth and a coiled tongue. The purple hue is indicative of the Macaracas style while the spines and claws allude to the dangerous or protective symbolism of the creature! Size: 11" Diameter x 3" H (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, before 2000
