Description:

Starts at $500 A polychrome Pre-Columbian Cocle pedestal plate often referred to as a "Fruitera," from ancient Panama. This example is of the Macaracas phase/style, ca 800 - 1000 CE, and measures 8"H x 10"D. It features an orange slip with designs in black, purple, and red. The designs on the sides of the pedestal stem are thought to represent the pattern of the Boa Constrictor, while the patterns on the top likely depict stylized Jaguars or Saurian deities. Provenance: Former Florida, USA collection. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

  • Notes: All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids, papered by our parent company, Artemis Gallery Ancient Art, as well as Antiquities-Saleroom.
  • Condition: Minor wear, weathering and abrasions overall. The top plate is intact with no repair, and the pedestal base has been repaired from a clean partial lower break, with expert restoration over the breaklines and to a single missing fragment on one side of the base. These vessels are most commonly found broken to some degree, believed to have been ritually "killed" in ancient times. Ample Manganese deposits remain, attesting to the authenticity of this example.
