Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful polychrome pottery dish hailing from the Panamanian Kingdom of Gran Cocle. The vessel has a short hollow pedestal base with a flared foot, a wide basin with a shallow central cavity, and a rolled rim painted in a beautiful color palette. The bowl face is intricately painted in a style characteristic of the Conte/Macaracas style, featuring two wondrous saurian creatures - birdlike/dragon/crocodile/amphibian creatures painted in red, purple, and black atop a cream ground. The heads face opposite one another, each surmounted with grand crests, and stemming from a standing body with long, curling claws and delineated legs. With such fine artistry and painstaking detail, this is a fabulous example from the Gran Cocle Kingdom! Size: 7.625" in diameter x 4.375" H (19.4 cm x 11.1 cm)
