Description:

Pre-Columbian, Macaracas / Cocle style, ca 800 - 1000 CE. Features a reddish-orange slip with diagnostically typical designs in black, purple, cream/white and red. The designs on the sides of the pedestal stem are thought to represent the pattern of the Boa Constrictor, while the patterns on the top depict complex, stylized Jaguars or Saurian deities and geometric designs. There are small triangular cutouts on opposing sides of the stem near the top, mirroring the painted designs nearby. 7" H by 10 ¼" in diameter. Provenance: Former private Florida, USA collection acquired in 1982 from a Sotheby Parke Bernet auction, item#1433. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

  • Condition: Displays impressively, with museum quality restoration of ancient breaks from a few large, original fragments on the top plate. This is typical since these vessels were most often ritually broken in antiquity, and are typically recovered in a partially fragmented state. The restoration was expertly done, with repair difficult to detect even under very close examination.
