Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl bearing an abstract sloth within the basin formed with black and red pigment. The wondrous creature exhibits enormous eyes, a gaping mouth, a diamond-shaped body, and tendril-like limbs with several slender claws. The wide bowl rests atop a flared pedestal base for stability and presentation. Size: 8.5" W x 5.5" H (21.6 cm x 14 cm)

  • Condition: Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and fading to pigment commensurate with age, with light earthen deposits, and a couple of spalls. Nice preservation to sloth decoration. Previous inventory label inside foot.
