Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A thick pendant comprised of 95% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) depicting a stylized turtle with retracted legs, a short tail, a domed shell, and a bar-shaped head with spherical, laterally-projecting eyes. The pendant, formed via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, exhibits a concave cavity beneath the shell, and the mouth of the animal doubles as the suspension loop. Strung on a modern leather cord, this is a fabulous and wearable example of ancient Panamanian jewelry! Size (pendant): 0.7" W x 0.8" H (1.8 cm x 2 cm); size (necklace strand): 22" L (55.9 cm); quality of gold: 95% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 12.0 grams.
