Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery dish upon a flared pedestal foot known as a frutero, the shallow basin is painted with a highly abstract bird creature. Artists would create what some call "split representations" the image will represent more than one animal - here the bird also looks very insectile and reptilian! The surface is slipped in beige that contrasts with the orange, purple, and black pigments, and the purple hue is indicative of the Macaracas style. Size: 6.75" Diameter x 3.5" H (17.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
