Description:

Arctic, northern Canada/Greenland, Paleo-Eskimo Dorset culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A rare find, a beautifully-preserved adze with a caribou bone handle, a thick antler used for hafting (which experimental archaeologists believe was used as a kind of shock absorber), and a knapped and smoothed greenstone blade. Sinews have been wrapped tightly around the head and haft, through holes drilled in the top of the bone handle. This type of adze was used for woodworking throughout the Dorset culture period, and a similar one was even found at L'anse aux Meadows! Size: 6.1" W x 12.5" H (15.5 cm x 31.8 cm); 13.4" H (34 cm) on included custom stand.
