Native American, Western United States, Nevada, Paiute or Washoe culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful beaded degikup basket made from plant fibers over coiled cane, the exterior completely beaded from base to rim in geometric patterns that resemble abstract butterflies. The basket is made by a coiling technique using native plants such as willow and bracken, and then seed beads are applied over the top using a netted stitch - a painstaking process. This purportedly came from the Stewart Indian School, a residential school that forced assimilation and taught vocational skills to Native children from 1890 to 1980. The in the 1936 the Wa-Pai-Shone Trading Post / Cooperative was opened on the campus and sold basketry and beaded artwork. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 4" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
