Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chimu/Incan, ca. 1100 to 1500 CE. Some of the rarest pieces of ancient art to come from Peru are these pyro engraved gourds. Created by taking a hollow gourd and using a hot tool to engrave decorations on the side. These only survive due to the extreme dryness found along the Peruvian coast. Larger example is engraved with repeating geometric patterns. Smaller is engraved with really cool barracuda like fish with long sharp teeth. Size: Largest measures 5" L x 2-1/2" H (12.7 cm x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Crested Butte, CO collection acquired before 1997.
