Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Yu'pik, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of lovely Native Alaskan dancing fans made from woven grasses, caribou hair, seal fur, and beadwork. These are handheld dancing implements known as "tegumiak", that are carried while dancing to accentuate the movements and help illustrate the story or song being performed. The fur trim is soft and ensures that the dancer does not accidentally slice through the thin veil between realms during these rituals, the fingers grip the loops to prevent any open hand movements. The dances often honor the spirits of the animals hunted by the Yu'pik; the butterfly perhaps symbolizes rebirth, and the beads are stitched onto seal fur, the long white hairs are from caribou. These come in a modern wood and glass display case. Size of single fan: 11.25" L x 9" W (28.6 cm x 22.9 cm); case: 21" L x 17" W (53.3 cm x 43.2 cm)
