Description:

Western Europe, World War I era, ca. 1914 to 1918. A lovely pair of matching World War I era brass trench art vases made from two French 75 mm artillery shell casings. The outer surfaces of both vessels have been decorated with a floral vine or flowering tree motif, skillfully delineated in repousse against a meticulously textured background. Each shell is marked 75 DEC on the base. Soldiers created remarkable works during the lulls from the front lines to be kept as mementos. Two wonderful, matching examples of this intriguing form of folk art! Size of each (both are relatively similar): 3.375" W x 13.75" H (8.6 cm x 34.9 cm)
