Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid 20th century CE. A festive pair of rattles, similar to Caribbean maracas or rumba shakers, made from hollow gourds (possibly calabashes) attached to wooden handles, one oval shaker painted with two colorful standing figures (vaqueros) wearing magnificent sombreros and costumes as well as a slithering serpent and a blooming cactus, the other with three ornately dressed standing figures and a bird atop a pedestal. Both produce marvelous percussive sounds when shook in a rhythmic manner. Size: 3.875" in diameter x 11" H (9.8 cm x 27.9 cm) and 5.125" in diameter x 10.5" H (13 cm x 26.7 cm)

  • Condition: Smaller rattle has a pressure crack on one side. Larger rattle fits handle a bit loosely, but is attached. Both show expected surface wear with paint loss.
