Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. Two twisted and braided bronze bracelets, both made from multiple strands of long, thread-like cylinders wrapped and twined around one another. One has a tight weave made of cylinders the same length that meet at each terminal and wrap around each other; this example has a gorgeous azurite patina. The other is composed of several thin cylinders of the same size and then one very thin, wire-like piece of bronze that is braided through it. The terminals of that bracelet are hammered flat. Size of largest (though both are extremely close in size): 3.05" W (7.7 cm)

Many Vikings did not have a standard minted currency available to them, and so instead kept their wealth in the form of jewelry made from precious metals. A common practice seems to have been to amass a hoard of these objects and then deposit them, often in water sources like rivers.
